Whether you’re a music enthusiast, an aspiring artist, or someone eager to explore Indigenous traditions, our workshops will help you create, learn and explore!
Music Workshops
Join us for an exciting series of music workshops led by accomplished musicians and educators. These one-hour workshops are designed for music lovers and musicians of all levels and provide a unique opportunity to learn from some of the best in the field. Each session focuses on a different instrument, allowing participants to delve deeply into their chosen area of interest. Registration is required and there’s a small fee of $10 per workshop.
Indigenous Workshop Demonstrations
Join esteemed Indigenous artists and cultural leaders for immersive sessions, including Dennis Leon's exploration of musical heritage, Pat Calihou's Métis wood carving and painting, and Arnie Leon's workshops on the sacred First Nations flute and the Eagle Dance. These workshop demonstrations offer a profound insight into Indigenous music, art and culture. These workshops are FREE; no registration required.

The Heartbeat of Indigenous Culture

Join Dennis Leon, known by his traditional name TsaTsomTun, for a captivating workshop titled "The Heartbeat of Indigenous Culture." A name passed down by his father, TsaTsomTun means Thunder, a fitting moniker for this musically talented and creative individual. Dennis is a well-respected member of the Kwantlen community, serving as both a cultural teacher and the Keeper of Songs.
In this workshop, Dennis will share the rich musical heritage of his people through stories and songs. He grew up immersed in music, from traditional drum beats to contemporary melodies, and he carries a library of songs in his head. Attendees will experience the connection between music and culture as Dennis demonstrates the "Heartbeat of Indigenous Culture" through his performances.
This is a unique opportunity to learn from a master storyteller and Indigenous musician, gaining insight into the deep cultural traditions of the Kwantlen community.

Métis Wood Paddle Carving and Painting
With Pat Calihou

Join Pat Calihou, a renowned Métis artist and carver, for a hands-on demonstration of wood paddle carving and painting. Pat is best known for his work on Métis-style paddles, canoes, playgrounds, traditionally built Red River carts, and most recently, a full-size replica York boat and a Red River cart at Fort Langley National Historic Site.
In addition to his carving expertise, Pat is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist specializing in slide guitar, performing Métis blues. This workshop will showcase his exceptional skills in both carving and painting, providing attendees with a unique opportunity to learn about Métis cultural art forms and techniques.
Cedar Weaving Demonstration

Join Hazel Gludo, a member of Kwantlen First Nation, in a demonstration on Coast Salish Cedar Weaving. Hazel will talk about the cedar tree: how it was used by her people years ago and their great respect for the cedar tree, and the importance of respecting the trees that are around us.
Cedar has long been a valuable resource to the Northwest Coast First Nations people, and it also plays an important role in spiritual belief and ceremonial life.
Hazel has been weaving cedar for a number of years. From an early age, her mother taught her the importance of cedar and how to embrace its values. Always interested in art, and with experience in leatherwork, beading, painting/illustration and macrame, she learned cedar weaving from master Stó:lō/Skowkale weaver, Wendy Richie.
Hazel immersed herself in learning cedar weaving techniques and small commissioned projects to enhance and build her knowledge and skills. As she became more involved with cedar weaving, she also began work to instruct cultural classes in cedar weaving and harvesting in the Kwantlen community as well as work with the Langley School District as a Cultural Presenter. Since 2013, Hazel has worked as a Cultural Presenter at the Fort Langley Historic Site where she is treasured for her knowledge and connection to Kwantlen culture and history.
First Nations Flute

Join Arnie (Lek’hoosh) Leon, a member of the Sts’aillers Nation from the upper Fraser Valley of British Columbia, for an immersive workshop on the First Nations flute. Committed to sharing his culture with all people, Arnie will guide participants through the rich traditions and spiritual significance of this sacred instrument.
The hauntingly beautiful sound of the Indigenous flute is believed to communicate with the spiritual realm, animals, and the elements, serving as a powerful tool for spiritual healing and connection. In this workshop, Arnie will explore the flute's role in Indigenous tradition, culture, and spirituality, emphasizing its symbolic meanings of Love, Peace, and Harmony.

The Eagle Dance

Join Arnie (Lek'hoosh) Leon, a member of the Sts’aillers Nation from the upper Fraser Valley of British Columbia for an immersive workshop on the Eagle Dance. The Eagle Dance is a highly spiritual ceremony that honors the eagle as a messenger to the creator, embodying the beauty, power, and spirituality of this revered bird.
In Indigenous culture, the eagle holds a special place of respect and is considered sacred. Through this workshop, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the Eagle Dance's significance in Indigenous tradition, culture, and spirituality. Arnie will guide attendees through the dance's symbolic meanings and its role in connecting with the spiritual realm.

Indigenous Language Painted Canvas in Halq’eméylem and/or hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓

This language workshop invites participants to paint a canvas then stencil in their favourite word or words in Halq’eméylem and/or hən̓q̓əmin̓əm in metallic felts. Kwantlen First Nations member and cultural leader, Fern Gabriel (sesmélət) will share words in the local Indigenous language in either Halq’eméylem or hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and participants can choose words that resonate with them.
Halq’eméylem is the Up River dialect of the Coast Salish peoples. hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ is spoken by the Down River people’s of the Fraser Valley, including the Musqueam, Tsleil-Waututh, Kwikwetlem, Tsawwassen, Katzie, and Kwantlen Nations.
Fern is a Language and Cultural Teacher at the Langley School District and Kwantlen Polytechnic University and is a gifted storyteller.
In 2017, Gabriel wrote Let’s Count the Moon, a book which teaches children how to count to 13 in hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓. The book is illustrated by her sister, q̓ʷɑti̓cɑ, Phyllis Atkins, and is a collaboration between the Langley School District, the Aboriginal Program at the Langley School District, K'wy'i'y'e Spring Salmon Studio, and stɑl̓əw̓ Arts and Cultural Society.

Summer Florals Watercolour Workshop

Join artist Julie Epp for a delightful watercolour line and wash workshop, perfect for all skill levels, including beginners. In this workshop, participants will learn to quickly sketch and ink a drawing, then use watercolour wash techniques to fill it with vibrant color.
The focus will be on intuitive drawing, creating quick gestural sketches, and exploring the beauty of flower bouquets. Flower bouquets will be provided on the table for inspiration, allowing participants to capture their essence through art.
This no-experience-needed approach aims to make everyone comfortable with drawing and painting, encouraging artistic expression and creativity. Mehndi (Henna Art) Workshop

Join Baljeet Kaur, a skilled Mehndi artist and experienced workshop facilitator, for an engaging and informative Mehndi Workshop. Baljeet combines tradition and innovation to share the beauty and cultural significance of this ancient art form, creating beautiful designs and patterns that fade over time but leave a lasting impression of elegance and culture.
Baljeet will begin with an introduction to Mehndi art, followed by a demonstration of basic Mehndi designs on printed paper. Participants will practice these designs on the sheets provided, gaining confidence in their skills. Sample designs, including music themes, will be provided for participants to practice on paper.
Once comfortable, participants will apply their chosen designs on their own hands, with guidance and assistance from Baljeet as needed.
Baljeet has honed her art in India, reflecting a deep appreciation for the rich history and diverse techniques of Mehndi application. This workshop will include informative discussions, creative exploration, and the opportunity to experiment with both traditional motifs and modern styles.

Polaroid Landscapes in Watercolour

Join artist Julie Epp for a unique and creative watercolour workshop where participants will learn to paint beautiful landscapes in a Polaroid style. In this session, you'll use limited colours and simple watercolour techniques to create a small, 4"x3" painting within a 2.5"x2.5" square space, giving it the look of a Polaroid picture.
Taking inspiration from local scenery, reference images from the area will be provided to spark your creativity. Julie will guide you step-by-step through the process, encouraging you to add personal elements to make each painting unique.
This workshop is designed for all skill levels, so no prior experience is needed. It's a great opportunity to explore watercolour painting in a fun and approachable way, leaving with a charming mini-landscape that captures the essence of Fort Langley.

About Julie Epp
Julie Epp is a Vancouver-based painter and educator known for her pop-surrealistic figurative portraits. Her artworks seamlessly blend elements of plants, animals, insects, and flowers. Influenced by art nouveau, historical and mythical narratives, as well as science and nature, Julie draws inspiration from both old masters and contemporary artists. This influence has shaped her artistic journey, prompting a continuous exploration of techniques and ideas derived from these sources.
As an educator, Julie Epp’s goal is to foster creativity and encourage participants to embrace their unique artistic inclinations. Whether in an hour-long class or a five-session course, she aims to help students loosen up and appreciate their natural creative contributions, rather than fighting against them. Julie's approach applies to both children and adults, and she hopes that by promoting this attitude, she can help students overcome frustration and the fear of making mistakes, enabling them to enjoy and fully engage in the creative process.

Metallic Objects (Acrylic)

Join Sichen Grace Chen for a unique and educational acrylic painting workshop inspired by the brass instruments used in jazz music. Participants will learn step-by-step how to paint metallic objects using acrylic paint, guided by Sichen’s expert instruction.
Participants will learn the grid method to plan out proportions accurately and understand the importance of values in painting. Reference pictures of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, tubas, and other metallic-finished instruments will be provided to guide your artwork.
Participants will receive detailed instructions on painting techniques to capture the reflective quality of metallic objects. All ages and skill levels are welcome, making this workshop a great opportunity for family learning and artistic growth.
Each participant will leave the workshop with an impressive metallic painting and a better understanding of technical painting skills.
