WHAT 2024 ATTENDEES AND SUPPORTERS HAVE TO SAY

WHAT OUR ARTISTS HAVE TO SAY

"I had the wonderful opportunity to facilitate two visual art workshops, specifically in acrylic painting, with the Fort Langley Jazz and Arts Festival during the summer of 2024. It was such a lovely experience teaching a visual medium alongside other musical creatives; facilitating visual art workshops enriches not only the workshop participants and the Festival goers but also the instructors! I found that the liveliness of the Festival elevated the experiences of the workshop participants who were already so eager and excited to paint leisurely or even learn a new skill. It is truly valuable that the Fort Langley Jazz and Arts Festival provides so many accessible, free, and public community-based programs for people of all ages to experience music and visual art. I had the pleasure of interacting with many first-time painters and practicing artists too. Seeing the relationships being built in real-time under the workshop tents was truly amazing."

Sichen Grace Chen
Art Workshop Facilitator

”I had the pleasure of facilitating a Mehndi workshop at the 2024 Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival, and it was a truly wonderful experience. The festival’s vibrant and welcoming atmosphere created the perfect environment for creative workshops like mine. Personally it was a beautiful opportunity for an artist like me to share my art. The response to the workshop was amazing. Participants of all ages joined in, enthusiastically applying Mehndi designs and sharing in the cultural art form. It was inspiring to see how engaged and excited everyone was. The festival’s support of accessible, community-based arts programming was truly impressive. Equally impressive was the professional approach of the coordinators who had worked hard to present such art forms for everyone to enjoy.  Being a part of this event was an enriching experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such an inclusive and fun celebration of the arts.”

Baljeet Kaur
Mehndi Artist

“I had the pleasure of facilitating workshops at the 2024 Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival and it was a wonderful experience. The environment of the festival in downtown Fort Langley made for a great place to hold a workshop and though the workshop was pre-registered, I was happy to see a lot of people looking to participate as walk-ins. The community members who attended the festival were happy to see the workshop in action, and I think it acted as a bit of entertainment too, and I had many people ask about it outside of participation. Participants loved the painting projects and found them to be an inspiring escape from the busy summer and many said how they would be heading home to make more art as soon as possible! Community-based arts programming like this is incredibly important in the community because it helps people see themselves as creatives and allows them to explore art-making without the stress of purchasing supplies or figuring out where to begin. I am also happy to be involved as a working artist, because it allows me to work with participants who may not have found my classes otherwise. The audience of the Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival seem to be very interested in participating in arts programming of all kinds and I look forward to offering more workshops in the coming years. “

On behalf of the Kwantlen First Nation community, we welcome you to the 2023 Fort Langley Jazz and Arts Festival.

This event has been growing in size and popularity in recent years, and we are happy to offer some words of welcome to this special community and place that we call home for event guests, artists, performers, organizers, sponsors and volunteers.

The land and resources in and around Fort Langley and areas up and down the river have been our place of home for countless generations.  We need to give honour and respect always to our sacred lands and resources for all that they have provided and continue to provide, and never take them for granted.  We are blessed to call this area home, and we all owe a responsibility for their protection and preservation for our next generations.

Music and art are important features and expressions of all cultures.  At Kwantlen, we have very deep and longstanding practices in singing, dancing, drumming, art, design and storytelling, and much of this is tied to our long-standing connections to land, resources and each other.

We honour all the artists and performers who are a part of this festival and encourage you to celebrate the diversity of performances that will be a part!  Please check out the indigenous art and culture stage, the arts zone, the celebration of young artists and main stage shows!  Enjoy, tread lightly and our best wishes for a wonderful event!

I’d like to take a moment to express our gratitude for the opportunity given to the Learning Disability Society to participate in the Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival Kidz Zone. Honestly, it was one of the best events we attended this year! Besides the fantastic organization, the team assisting us on the day was extremely accommodating, friendly and helpful. We got a chance to connect with many families in need of our services, and having the opportunity to spread the word about our services is truly amazing!

Thank you for all your support from the beginning, for being responsive and attentive– it’s all very appreciated! We are genuinely grateful for the support provided by you and your team.

Such a great night. Just unbelievable. Thanks for all your hard work.
The Friday Blues Show was fantastic !!! Great job, very well organized, many thanks..
Excellent festival thanks to the organizers, board, volunteers and musicians!
The festival was totally amazing. Everyone thought the music was incredible. I ran into some new people in town that didn’t go this year and after hearing it from their backyard have decided they need to take it in next year. Much thanks to the organizers and volunteers who worked tirelessly all weekend with a smile on their face. Never mind the people who worked all year to make this all happen. This town rocks and people in the town do too. See you all next year. Until then just remember this is the best Fort Langley Jazz and Arts Festival in the country.Keep rocking Fort Langley.

WHAT 2022 MUSICIANS HAVE TO SAY

We enjoyed playing the fest and Beatniks Bistro. Thanks for the hospitality and thanks to the crew.

Brent Parkin

I along with the band am so grateful for this superb opportunity to perform at the Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival. The ambiance of being together with nature in the park and performing on a grand piano was pretty special - and sound engineers tweaked the perfect balance for the quartet to boot. I hope you will be acknowledged and written up in the local paper for organizing with blood, sweat and tears to bring about excellent musicality and artistic shows, productions, and versatility for all to enjoy.

On behalf of FJQ, yours truly, Tom, Graham, and Bernie, a hearty thank you - not forgetting Barb Fus, acknowledging her endless emails & tasks.

Thanks a whole bunch,🎶

WHAT 2021 ATTENDEES HAVE TO SAY

I love that you bring the festival to Fort Langley. It brings the community together. Music is a medium that connects everyone together

I really appreciate all your hard work and what you bring to the community of Fort Langley.

Thank you so much for your continued dedication and commitment to bringing this wonderful event to Fort Langley.

It was so fantastic to attend a live music performance, so miss it!

Thank you for an inspiring show!

I enjoyed the outdoor free concerts on Saturday.  Too bad it rained but I was prepared with my chair, umbrella and poncho. So thank you to all the organizers, volunteers, sponsors and of course the musicians.

Keep up the good work and please know that the community appreciates you a lot!

Great live show Thursday night! Was great to do something in person!

I loved how well organized the free Saturday performances were.

I thought you folks did a great job with the live streaming. Production, sound, interviews - all excellent and professionally done! I love live music and have not been excited about streaming but since COVID, we do what we have to do to support musicians!

I think overall it was a great endeavor. We need more of these to support local artistic talent. A huge shout out to the organizers and to the unique artists with their mesmerizing instruments, beautiful voices and lyrics.

Fantastic festival, will attend next year.

I am so pleased the 2021 Odlum Brown Fort Langley Jazz and Arts Festival is happening in person! There’s nothing like good music, beautiful art, and culture offered in a festival environment to bring back joy after this challenging year.  My gratitude to the Odlum Brown Fort Langley Jazz and Arts Festival committee, the many community volunteers, organizations, museums, galleries, and artists who have worked so hard to bring the vision to reality. It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Odium Brown Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival 2021!

On the weekend of September 2 - 5, 2021, music lovers and artists from Langley and throughout the region will have the opportunity to experience live jazz music and visual art at this exceptional event.

The Festival has been a huge benefit for Fort Langley and has drawn an increase in visitors to our site and furthered our objective of educating the public. We were disappointed about the Festival not happening in the same way in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, we support the continuation of the Festival in some form and support the concept of a virtual festival and any small gatherings that may be permitted. A virtual festival will keep the festival relevant and provide a good basis for the festival to return as an outdoor festival in 2021. The leadership of the Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival Society has certainly done a great job to get this Festival going and has the capacity to continue and grow it in the future.

Thank you for contributing the clips from the 2020 Virtual Fort Langley Jazz and Arts Festival to COL’s Commonwealth Day Celebration video. With your personal support, we were able to organise an inspiring and uplifting celebration at a time when communities across the Commonwealth and beyond are coping with the effects of the pandemic. We came together while staying apart, sending a message of hope and resilience.

Jill Townsend Big Band.png

As a past participant of the 2019 festival and Artistic Director of the 17-piece Jill Townsend Jazz Orchestra, I see enormous value an event such as this brings to the community, to the audience and to each of the artists involved. The ability and support for musicians to now participate in a virtual festival will provide an important artistic outlet, (during what has been a very difficult time for the arts) generate several performance opportunities for a wide array of jazz artists and potentially reach an even broader audience of jazz fans. While the platform for engagement and delivery has been forced to change, a virtual Jazz and Arts Festival will continue to be highly effective rewarding and meaningful.

Community events play an important role in the development and continued success of a destination. Events such as the Fort Langley Jazz and Arts Festival historically have driven visitors to the community thereby generating additional revenues for the local economies and encouraging residents to rediscover their community offerings. Due to the current Provincial Health Orders in place that will prevent you from having the 2020 event as planned we applaud you for the extensive work you are doing to create an online experience.

While it may have been easy for the organizing community to push pause on an event for 2020, we believe the work that you are doing will help keep those that had hoped to attend the original event engaged and interested in participating in the event for 2021.

I have performed in festivals throughout Canada and the US in my 40 years of music-making and this one festival outshines them all. Dave Quinn and his dedicated planners are so devoted to their community and this family-friendly event and I hope they continue to receive the support they need to keep this fabulous jazz festival going each year.

Miles Black , Jazz Musician

I have been involved in the educational offerings of the festival in the past. I was impressed with the calibre of artists and their eagerness to share their knowledge with up and coming young music students. This is a unique experience for students. The virtual festival, while second to an in-person festival, will still provide opportunities for artists and students and keep the momentum of the festival going this year. I applaud all of the efforts of the volunteers and organizers for their efforts to present a virtual festival. Perhaps this is an opportunity to reach a wider audience that will result in more visitors to the community for future live festivals and showcase the wonderful talent that we have in our region.

I’m sure we all share the sentiment that music has a uniquely uplifting quality, especially during a time like this. For that reason, I was pleased to hear that this year’s festival was not put to rest, but instead to be moved online. If there’s anything that the online world has shown me in the last while, it’s that art and its performances are still alive. My past couple years of experiences leave me feeling positive that this festival will add to that growing sense of thriving music.

Julian Borkowski, 2019 Rising Star Award Recipient

I work with hundreds of great well-established festivals throughout North America and I want you to know that you have a world-class event in your community. I am amazed at the efforts of Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival to bring industry and community together to deliver a quality virtual and intimate festival amidst overwhelming challenges. We all have to adjust and find new models until we can all get back to gathering together. I am confident that you will deliver an experience that will resonate with people and connect them to community through music and art and I can’t wait to experience it myself. I strongly believe that the new model will lead to great economic and community benefits through future editions.

Congratulations to the Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival on the launch of their second year. The Government of British Columbia’s Amplify BC Live Music program works to supports events like these and to highlight B.C.’s incredible musical talent.

This is a community that loves music, the arts, and culture, and we are thrilled that the Fort Langley Jazz and Arts Festival is returning this summer. Last year’s inaugural event was a huge success that was enjoyed by visitors of all ages, who had the opportunity to enjoy free, family-oriented fun and world-class entertainment on a summer’s day, all within the unique setting of Fort Langley.

Mayor Jack Froese, Township of Langley

Events such as the Fort Langley Jazz and Arts Festival drive visitors to the community, generate additional revenues for the local economies and encourage residents to rediscover their community offerings. Tourism Langley supported the Fort Langley Jazz and Arts Festival through our grant and sponsorship program both the inaugural and second year. We were impressed with the quality of the inaugural event and thrilled with the event growth from a day and a half to three nights and two days in the second year. The attendance increase of 5,000 to 15,000 further demonstrated the appetite for an event of this type in the Township of Langley.

I am very impressed with the line-up this year and love the mix of seasoned professionals and rising stars. The Festival organizers have taken this event from sapling to full grown maple tree in just under two years and are now positioned to becoming one of the Province’s premier music festivals. Fort Langley, the Birthplace of British Columbia, once considered a potential capital city for the Province is now staking its claim as the ‘Cultural Capital of BC’. The Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival is a cornerstone among community events helping the Village gain province-wide recognition as the place to come enjoy arts, culture and heritage.

I would like to express our thanks to the Fort Langley Jazz Fest for the amazing 3 days of music, arts and community that the jazz festival brought to Fort Langley. Every nook and corner of the Fort was filled with music and laughter and great smiling faces. It was exceptionally organized and showcased Fort Langley wonderfully. This is the type of homespun small-town festival that fits Fort Langley to a T. The variety of music and events that were available to the public and community in the Fort area was amazing. It really was a great celebration.

Soo-Jean Lee, President, Fort Langley Community Improvement Society

The BIA received overwhelmingly positive feedback from our visitors and merchants alike for the event over the last two years. We are pleased to offer our continued support to this event.

Parks Canada is pleased to welcome festival attendees to Fort Langley National Historic Site. Through unique events like these, we can encourage more people to visit our cherished national historic sites, hear the stories of the people and events that helped shape Canada, and learn about our heritage.

The Langley Heritage Society is pleased to be involved in the Fort Langley Jazz Festival since its inception in 2018. During both years, we welcomed a popup stage to be installed on the grounds of the historic Fort Langley CNR Station amidst our station garden. As a non-profit society providing free admission to Fort Langley’s historic train station, we were happy to assist the organizers who created a family-friendly event within the village of Fort Langley. Not only free, this event utilizes various areas within the village rather than concentrating in just one locale. This not only benefitted the village merchants, eased congested streets, but also enabled visitors and residents to explore all of Fort Langley in search of the various stages. The event encourages more people, who may not have visited the Township of Langley, to visit the village and also stop by the Fort Langley CNR Station to learn about the history of small community railway station.

Helen Williams, CNR Station Manager, Langley Heritage Society

WHAT MUSICIANS HAVE TO SAY

Thank you Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival for having Big City Soul play this incredible event. We had a fantastic time. It was a blast to play in front of a live audience again. Big shout out to ALL involved, The Audio and Video Crew, Theatre Staff, and Festival Organizers are top-notch.

Live music is back, and we were honoured to be part of it.

Terry Raible BIG CITY SOUL

Being a hometown band playing to a hometown crowd was the optimum thrill of performing at the festival. Even though there was a threat of rain, it didn’t dampen the high attendance of Blues Hoodoo fans from attending. Performing live at an acknowledged major Jazz Festival was our highlight of the year and we can only hope to be included in next year's Fort Langley’s celebration of jazz and the arts.

Incredibly high production values, a FANTASTIC job with the mix – definitely a cut above most of the virtual festivals I've seen thus far. Mimosa & Siobhan Walsh Group looked and sounded great! What 2020 attendees have to say

One of the best things I have seen online. Kudos to the organizers of the Fort Langley Jazz Fest!

A BIG Thank you to all the organizers and volunteers. It was an amazing event and we can’t wait for next year!

Huge congratulations on innovating and knocking it out of the park. I listened in on the Saturday afternoon performances and they were really incredible – the sound quality was so crisp and clear. I sent the link to some of my pals and they all remarked on the sound quality as well.

The production of a virtual jazz and arts festival at this scale is a massive, uncharted undertaking and one that very few people have had the courage to take on. Congratulations for pulling it off!

Great experience in difficult times, Well Done!

Thank you. Your vision and work brought much joy to many people in the time of COVID-19, outstanding!

Really enjoyed the concerts, made for a great Friday night. Each band was brilliant, right on the money.

Loved the concert and would have attended it live if not for COVID. It was wonderful to have a few friends in my “ bubble” as we watched and listened to the fabulous music!

The quality of the live stream presentation was really outstanding....sound and videography.....you captured the feeling of a live show. I watched the Friday evening event and your selection of artists was excellent. It was the best Friday evening I have spent since this COVID thing started. We had a socially distanced watch party - couldn't have been better!

Look forward hopefully to a live festival next year. Thanks for organizing this great festival online as it is a great way to showcase our great local talent.

Amazing performances last night by the Taylor James Band, Dalannah Gail Bowen, and Tom Lavin and the Legendary Powder Blues at the Fort Langley Jazz and Arts Festival.

Was such a great concert!!! The first night of the Fort Langley Jazz Festival. A powerhouse of excellent music starting with the Taylor James Band, then Dalannah Gail Bowen  and finishing with Tom Lavin and the Legendary Powder Blues Band. No one can beat Jim Byrnes as MC! The sound and cinematography were outstanding!! Also had an enthusiastic (distance) crowd to hang with! Great time and company to hang with!!!

It was a truly excellent live stream concert. High-level production, camera work, audio, stage lighting ..all world-class. Great performances by all.

Great evening of virtual live #jazzathome courtesy of @fortjazzfest

Loving the colour of Tom Lavin’s guitar! Looking forward to tomorrow’s lineup.

R.E.S.P.E.C.T. for Siobhan Walsh and her group in tonight’s lineup at #JazzAtHome @fortjazzfest. Another great evening of virtual jazz.

What 2019 attendees have to say

We have been to New Orleans twice and the festival had a very similar vibe. Really thought it was excellent!

Very well organized! Excellent work from organisers and volunteers from going one day to three days! Well done!

The festival was great. The staff (volunteers) were wonderful and the general feeling was very laid back. Looking forward to next year and will probably look for accommodations. Will also take in the free shows next year as well.

My husband and I spent the entire weekend enjoying it and we were just so impressed by everything you’ve pulled together: the quality of the musical choices, the wonderful venue and stages, the workshop and all the other thoughtful touches and facilities (like a water station and nice washrooms!)

Awesome show (All Star Blues show) last night in Fort Langley! What a great venue! Thanks to the organizers and everyone that came out!

I attended Saturday and Sunday and really enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere. The organizers did an amazing job and the quality of music was so fun!

We came to the jazz festival (me, family & dog) from Chilliwack. Thoroughly enjoyed the music. Ate some fantastic food. Strolled through some fascinating shops and art exhibits. Several delightful people came and greeted our dog, petted her, talked to her, and loved on her ;-). We will absolutely, definitely, positively add the Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival to our summer routine every year from now on because we LOVE jazz.

My wife and I really enjoyed the music this year at the Fort Langley Jazz Festival. There was a large mesh shade tent-like structure that helped a lot for staying cool while enjoying the performers.

Great event! Loved the pop-up performances!!!

Terrific event! The emphasis on young (and excellent) jazz players was hugely appreciated.

What Fort Langley residents have to say

Absolutely the best festival...and how do you top this next year! A great time was had by all, and I think the merchants and restaurants enjoyed it too! I know Beatniks sure did, they were packed all weekend.......

Fantastic weekend, boy that really put Fort Langley on the map! A great festival in every way!

This year will be hard to beat but I bet you have something up your sleeves already......it was the best weekend ever in Fort Langley, for the merchants and restaurants, for the jazz and blues fans, the kids programs and on and on, what a great way to bring the community together.

What volunteers have to say

What a wonderful experience the whole Jazz and Art Festival was! I would like to express my thanks to you and all the other organizers for your amazing contribution to our town. You should be proud. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the team of excellent volunteers and connecting with members of our music-loving/making community. Thank you to everyone who did their part to make this happen.

I loved being on the info desk, answering people's questions, helping them out and chatting with them. I really enjoyed it all.

The Langley Jazz Festival felt very welcoming like I knew a lot of people there for a very long time even though I met them that day. I love the fact that it is very community based and I felt very at home.
