Brad Turner, Workshop Facilitator, Piano
Jazz Master, JUNO and National Jazz Award-winning pianist/trumpeter/composer Brad Turner has been an enormously influential figure on the Vancouver jazz scene since 1997 and is one of Canada’s most in-demand jazz musicians. After receiving his Master's degree in Jazz Performance from the University of North Texas in 1992, Brad returned to Vancouver, and was hired as an instructor of trumpet at Capilano University. He is also the artist in residence at the Langley Community Music School where he first began his journey with music. He has performed and/or recorded with such artists as Joe Lovano, Bill Frisell, Kenny Wheeler, John Scofield, Michael Moore, Reneé Rosnes, Harold Mabern, Jimmy Greene, Ingrid Jensen, Peggy Lee, Dave Douglas, Mike Murley, Seamus Blake, Kenny Werner, Mino Cinelu, Roy McCurdy, Russell Malone and Ernie Watts. Turner's groups have opened for McCoy Tyner, Roy Haynes, Wayne Shorter, Clark Terry, Diana Krall, Ahmad Jamal and Tony Bennett. As a leader, Brad has released ten albums, eight as a trumpeter with the Brad Turner Quartet, and two as a pianist with his trio. As a founding member of the multiple Juno award winning group Metalwood, he has released six albums.
André Lachance, Bass
Originally from Québec City, bassist and guitarist André Lachance has been based in Vancouver for 32 years. He has established himself as one of the most in-demand musicians on the West Coast music scene. His current group, Quatuor André Lachance, has been together for 12 years and released “The Orange Challenge” in 2017 and “Après L’Hiver” in 2022.
He also performs with the Brad Turner Quartet, the Chris Gestrin Trio, the Peggy Lee Band and the Hard Rubber Orchestra among many others. He has been involved in numerous projects in jazz, musique actuelle, funk and R’n’B and has also collaborated with various film, dance and theatre companies.
André regularly tours across the country as well as internationally, is featured on multiple albums and broadcasts and also teaches music at Capilano University in the jazz degree program. He has performed with Joe Lovano, Clark Terry, Lee Konitz, Benny Golson, Dave Douglas, Kenny Wheeler, Kenny Werner, Gary Bartz, Frank Morgan, Roy McCurdy and Claude Ranger among many others.
Dave Sikula, Guitar
Dave Sikula is a guitarist, instructor, audio engineer and producer based in Vancouver, BC. Since completing his undergraduate degree in Jazz Performance at the University of Toronto in 2002, Dave has worked in multiple facets of music ranging from live performance and teaching to audio engineering and production work in recording studios. With over thirty years of experience as a professional musician, Dave has established himself on the Vancouver jazz scene sharing the bandstand over the years with artists such as Brad Turner, Phil Dwyer, Cory Weeds, Jennifer Scott, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Brian Charette, Hadley Caliman, Ian Hendrickson-Smith and many others. In addition, Dave also currently leads his own trio featuring bassist Jeff Gammon and drummer Joe Poole.
Jennifer Scott, Voice
Jennifer Scott is a Vancouver-born vocalist and jazz pianist specializing in jazz, blues and world music. She is considered one of the more important jazz artists working in Canada and the United States today. Jennifer is in demand as an educator and clinician both in the United States and Canada and has taught and created many workshops and college courses. She is a voice/piano instructor in the Capilano University Jazz Studies program. From sold-out concerts in San Francisco to exclusive local club performances, Jennifer's performance experiences have been varied. She has appeared at jazz festivals across Canada and in several of the United States and has appeared with such jazz luminaries as Tommy Banks, Don Thompson, Kenny Wheeler, Skywalk, and Hugh Fraser, to name a few. As well as being a performer, she arranges and writes jazz and pop tunes, with several CDs containing a combination of original tunes, tunes she has arranged, and more traditional tunes. She has also appeared on many CBC recordings and has worked with many other musicians both live and in studio.
Jocelyn Waugh, Trumpet
Jocelyn Waugh is a versatile in-demand trumpet player who has performed in Canada, and the US with several groups, playing in a variety of styles, including Jazz, Mariachi, Funk, R&B and New Music. A 20-year veteran of the trumpet, she earned her degree in jazz education at Capilano University and teaches privately.
John Lee, Drums
Multi-instrumentalist John Lee continues to be one of the highest acclaimed jazz artists nationwide. John has been an educator and clinician for over a decade and continues to be an influential mentor in the Canadian jazz scene. A rare talent, Lee pushes the boundaries as a multi-instrumentalist in the jazz world as he regularly performs as a leader and in-demand sideman on five different instruments. After showing great interest in music at a young age, Lee developed into a virtuoso by his late teens. He moved to Boston in 2010 to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston where he was mentored by Ralph Peterson Jr and Dave Santoro. Lee relocated back to the west coast in 2016 and began his professional career. Besides his current trio, Lee’s regular projects include Next Generation Jazz Collective, ORGANIC and In The Spirit of Ray Brown. Lee recorded his first album “The Artist” in 2021featuring legendary Jazz drummer Carl Allen.
Steve Kaldestad, Saxophone/Woodwinds
Steve Kaldestad is an in-demand jazz saxophonist and the academic coordinator of the Jazz Studies program at Capilano University. Since moving to Vancouver in 2008, Steve has become one of the most in-demand saxophonists on the scene. Steve has released three CDs on the Cellar Live label to great acclaim including Straight Up featuring the Mike LeDonne Trio and the newest release, New York Afternoon with the Renee Rosnes Trio. Originally from the prairies, Steve spent the ’90s in Montreal, obtaining his Bachelors and Masters degrees from McGill University. During this time Steve was awarded a grant to study with Lee Konitz in New York. In 2000, he began an eight-year stint in London, England and joined the Kate Williams Quartet, the Matt Wates Sextet, the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, the Gareth Lockrane Septet, and played regular gigs in the BBC big band, the Humphrey Lyttelton Group and others. He has also played and/or recorded with Renee Rosnes, Denzal Sinclaire, Mike LeDonne, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Peter Bernstein, the Karl Jannuska Group, Kevin Dean and many others.
