This week, we caught up with Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne!

Even though Kenny says that music is his whole life, he also loves tennis, making attempts at crossword puzzles, helping his friends through life's challenges, and reading about the history of jazz music.

To young, emerging and aspiring jazz musicians alike he says, “Follow your passion and be true to yourself about what musical direction your heart takes you!”

His own passion for music started at eight years old and he gets his inspiration from making people happy. “I first started by entertaining my parents and their friends when people would gather at our house,” he says. “This was a feeling for me to continue playing and feeling confident performing in front of people.”

Introducing Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne

1. How old were you when you first started playing?

I took my first piano lesson at eight years old from my choir director at my father’s church in San Francisco, California. We had a piano in our house.

2. Who was/is your biggest musical inspiration?

My biggest inspiration came from Ray Charles, Fats Domino and Errol Garner.

3. What inspires you to make and perform music?

The desire to make people happy and to listen to my songs and for them to show their appreciation for my talent. I first started by entertaining my parents and their friends when people would gather at our house. There was a feeling for me to continue playing and feeling confident performing in front of people.

4. What advice would you give a young musician starting out?

My advice to young musicians is to follow your passion and be true to yourself about what musical direction your heart takes you.

5. What do you do when you're not playing music?

My life now is all about music whether I’m playing, practicing or writing songs. I like reading about the history of the blues forefathers and how the blues reformed from the music of Africa to the blues that we know which was created in the Southern United States. I also like tennis although I’m not that good anymore. Sometimes, I’ll try crossword puzzles. When I was young, I loved mathematics in school. Lastly, I love counselling friends on life’s issues.
