This week, we caught up with Miss Emily!

She encourages artists to consider what kind of art they want to make and who would want to hear it, and find a way to connect the two musically. She says, “Art made for selfish reasons generally doesn’t reach as many people as art others can connect to.”

Connecting with others, including audience members like you, is what inspires her!

Her genuine passion for music and performing started from a very young age. She was only four years old when she held her first solo performance, and since age nine, she adored the album “Tapestry” by Caroline King.

Introducing Miss Emily

1. How old were you when you first started playing?

I’m told my first solo performance was at age four at my church. I sang a song from the back of a colouring book. I’ve loved gospel music as long as I can remember so this makes sense!

2. Who was/is your biggest musical inspiration?

I found my mother’s Carole King “Tapestry” album at age nine and it floored me! She sang and wrote and played piano. The album was from 1971 and there wasn’t a lot of that happening in modern music with women in 1990. It was a huge inspiration.

3. What inspires you to make and perform music?

Music connects me to other people - musicians, audience members, volunteers at festivals and promoters who are passionate about getting music heard. I love people and people who love music are my kind of people. It’s a constant inspiration for me.

4. What advice would you give a young musician starting out?

I would advise any new artist to lose their ego asap. Always be kind (especially to other artists) and always be authentic. Consider what kind of art you want to make and who would want to hear it and find a way to connect the two musically. Art made for selfish reasons generally doesn’t reach as many people as art others can connect to.

5. What do you do when you're not playing music?

Music and motherhood have always taken up my adult life. My daughter started college and moves out later this year. Perhaps I’ll find a hobby then. Part of my career is taking care of my body so I can move on stage. If I’m not working on my music career or mothering, I’m often exercising or doing yoga.
